Ribbed-Glass Nails Become the Ultimate Old-Money Manicure Trend Dominating Elegant Nail Looks

If you grew up sipping sparkling cider from your grandmother’s fluted glasses—the ones reserved for special occasions—you already get why ribbed-glass nails are captivating. This manicure features thin, raised vertical lines painted closely together. The linear texture catches the light, exuding old-world sophistication. “It’s heirloom energy reimagined,” says New York City-based nail artist Elle Gerstein.

Runway Ready Ribbed Nails

The look is already trending online, and ribbed-glass nails appeared on the runway during New York Fashion Week. Nail artist Christina Duong created a black-and-gold metallic ribbed manicure for the Sergio Hudson show, echoing the collection’s sharp pinstripes.

Though still gaining traction in the U.S., textured-gel designs are thriving in South Korea. “Textured gel is very popular. It works beautifully as an accent and has a refined, expressive finish,” says Minseo Kang, a Seoul-based nail artist.

How to Achieve Ribbed-Glass Nails

Creating this effect is easier than it looks. “Start with a cat-eye polish as your base and cure,” says Leslie Morel, a nail artist from Bergen County, New Jersey. “Apply a matte topcoat and cure for 60 seconds. Then use a clear glossy topcoat for the lines with a thin brush. The key is drawing the lines as close together as possible without overlapping.”

Specialized Techniques for Precision

In Seoul, artists use specialized tools like small flat brushes with dense bases and fine tips—similar to a wide-tooth comb—to carve ultra-precise ridges that feel architectural yet delicate.

Spider Gel Method

Gianni Garcia, nail artist and creative director of Art Nail NYC, prefers spider gel for crisp, raised lines. Using a dotting tool, she lifts and stretches the gel—like a super thin cheese pull—to create perfectly straight strands. Once the ribbed pattern is set over a solid base, she cures and seals with a topcoat. “This method makes the process faster and easier,” says Garcia.

Customizable Styles

The glass-like shimmer and depth make glossy stripes over a cat-eye base the internet’s favorite version of ribbed-glass nails. The design is highly versatile: glossy ribs over matte polish, matte stripes over high-shine bases, or cat-eye lines layered atop velvet shimmer. The combination of texture and finish is what gives this look its unique dimension.
