Calls for tougher regulations on senior drivers are growing, and new proposals suggest that people over 80 should be completely prohibited from driving.
As part of efforts to improve road safety measures, Labour is looking into the possibility of making eye exams mandatory for drivers 70 years of age and older, according to the Express.
Road users, however, are now claiming that this strategy might not work, with an increasing number of voices calling for drivers over 80 to completely give up their licenses and stop operating vehicles. According to recent polling data from ChooseMyCar.com, a noteworthy 38% of respondents think that people over 80 should not be allowed to drive at all.
According to the study, which polled 2,000 people in January 2026 survey, younger people are especially in favor of these limitations. According to an analysis of the data, 53% of Gen Z (18–29) and Millennials (30–45) would support a complete prohibition on drivers over 80.
The founder of ChooseMyCar.com and motoring expert Nick Zapolski emphasized the “increased risk” of health issues like declining vision among the elderly.
“Our research shows that millions of Brits are concerned about older people driving, even though many older drivers remain safe and capable on the roads,” he stated.Driving ability may be impacted by the increased risk of health problems associated with aging, such as poor vision.
