It’s hard to believe, but spring is only a few weeks away. Now is a great time to give your clothes a new look. We talked to five fashion stylists about the old spring trends that are going out of style and what clothes, bags, and accessories we should wear instead.
Stylists say that this spring, bright, happy colours are taking the place of neutral tones. Colour blocking, silk and lace, and outfits that can be mixed and matched are some of the other trends they see. Hooever 2-Piece Set for Women $43 on Amazon Celebrity stylists Elana and Dina Solomon of Stylishly Solomon say, “Uniform, neutral fits without a pop are feeling dated.” “Instead of muted, match-everything pieces, the mood now is for expressive colour contrast and statement hues.”
The Solomons suggest this sleeveless, color-blocked two-piece set because it is dramatic but not too much.
Don’t do: bows with frills
FOMOYUU Silk Lace Shorts for Women Credit: Amazon $20 $16 at Amazon Tannya Bernadette Moore, the founder of The Closet Edit, says, “The overly done bow detail is no longer in style.” Moore says, “The new update is refined femininity with a modern edge.” You could wear satin lace tanks over denim or satin bloomers like these with a big tee shirt. She says, “The change is less about adding cute details and more about picking pieces that can be styled in a less cute way.”
Don’t wear pale denim.
Wide-leg jeans for women from Levi’s Credit: Amazon $110 at Amazon Distressed, light-wash denim was popular for a while, but stylist Corinne Pierre-Louis says this casual look is being replaced by dark-wash and deep indigo denim, like the “shaded view” wash of these Levi’s wide-leg jeans. “It feels more elevated, versatile, and surprisingly fresh for spring when you wear the right top with it,” she says.
Don’t: Bags in Neutral Colours

It’s a quick and easy way to make your outfit stand out.
Don’t: Keep Things Simple

Instead, she suggests “playful, classic prints” like this skirt, which has a bright colour and small polka dots that catch the eye. “It’s a fun nod to the rising dot trends,” she says. If you want to make a statement in smaller ways, wear skirts with uneven hems.

She says to mix florals with stripes or bold solids with graphic prints. For example, this graphic T-shirt goes well with trousers in a fun print. She says, “The focus is on personality and contrast.”
Do: Big Totes
Dara Faux Suede Hobo Bag for Women by JW PEI $99 at Amazon $84 at Amazon Totes are always in style, but Pierre-Louis says they’re especially popular this spring because they are a better option than “ultra-mini micro-bags that barely hold the essentials.” She is mostly interested in bags that are useful and practical, but she has also been noticing big, sculptural bags, like this hobo bag with a very dramatic dip.
